Winery Visitation Blog Report - New River Valley Winery

Winery Visit:

Another term I have learned this semester is "charis" used to describe old byzantine architecture and describes the degree of spectacle of the winery and also "metaxu" which describes the holistic and sensroy environment. I would say that in a way you could apply these terms to each winery because they are each unique and offer different senses of environment and degrees of spectacle that may contribute to the overall wine tasting experience. For example, the winery I visited today was the New River Valley Winery, outside the city of Radford, and the patio deck where we sat overlooked the vast new river valley. It offered a great view and the winery is located on the top of one of the mountains so with a higher altidtude that may effect the quality and certain characteristics of the air that might contribute to a different scent or taste of the wine. Who knows, it's quite possible, and I think there are many more things that conribute to wine tastings at different wineries. I had a great experience here and really got to enjoy the weather, and the staff that worked there were all super friendly and eager to make sure we were taken care of in terms of atmosphere and wine picks.

Unfortunately I called the three local wineries within 20 miles of Blacksburg and only one of them gave tours, but they had an eight person minimum. So, with the winery I visited I was unable to tour any production facility and I even tried to sneak my head into a few buildings/sheds and I couldn't find anything relative to the production of their wines aside from the grape vines themselves. The grape vines looked really young to me as there was no bush or vines present on the lattice they have set up. Another thing I will add though is this is a small scale vineyard and I imagine all the vines/grapes are managed by hand only, planting, harvesting, etc.

Additionally the wine flights were pretty cheap. We got two wine flights for about $25.00 and I thought that was a kick ass deal. I only tried the sweet wine flight and this other special thing they offered us. We were offered some samples of a wine slushy, one red and one white, and those things were crazy. So refreshing, defenitely used a lighter sweet wine for both of them and on a hot day I imagine that would be dangerously fun.

Wine Tasting:

I ordered a flight of their sweet wines because I have never tried sweet wines before, and as the greatest rookie wine taster ever, I thought these sweet wines were rather exceptional compared to the earlier deep reds that I have tried. These were all more juicy and didn't have as much of a robust alcohol component to them. Below are my impressions of them as I took notes while I tried them. The list is also in order to match up with the flight depicted on the left, so top to bottom of this list corresponds to left to right in the picture.

2022 Colonel Luze - raspberry infused wine, was very sweet and light, doesn’t seem be be so strong in terms of alcoholic content, it was a bit syrupy, but very refreshing, I could drink this on a nice warm spring day just like today. Also getting hints of other berries, like strawberries and it’s sweet like a date.

2021 sneaky peach - again, very sweet and refreshing, light alcoholic content, not very acidic, can feel the syrupy texture but it’s very smooth and doesn’t sting at all going down the hatch. Hints of honey, and nectar

2021 Amore - when I smelled it it came off very strong, alcoholically, and is very floral. Still it’s very sweet, not as sweet as the other too, and oddly enough, although it is a rose colored wine it has a mouth feel of some sweet green grapes. Tastes like there was sweet n low sugar added to the glass.

2021 Depot Red - the sweetest red colored wine I’ve smelt. This was so smooth and lighter bodied, not as tannic as a full, deep red. It’s literally grape juice that’s got a touch of alcohol added to it. This one seems to have higher tartaric acid because it has a similar mouthfeel to a green apple

Here I will add the original decriptions listed on the menu from the winery:

2022 Colonel Luze (raspberry tea)
Not your mamma's sweet tea. This wine is a Black Pekoe raspberry infused wine. Perfect for porch sipping! Unique yet satisfying.

2021 Sneaky Peach
This white grape and peach blend is highly aromatic with a distinctive fresh peach finish.

2021 Amore (Catawba)
This beautiful rose colored wine is medium bodied and similar to a white zinfandel. Amore has a mild berry/fresh fruit flavor. Pair with fresh melon or strawberry shortcake. Also pairs well with barbecue or cold fried chicken.

2021 Depot Red
This wine is light, fruity, and sweet with a slightly tart edge. Think of adult grape juice, church wine and breakfast wine. Pair with aged sharp cheddar or goat cheese. Or it can compliment beef barbeque dishes, fish and chicken. But don't forget desserts as it goes delishiously with chocolate.

Casas Del Bosque Cabernet Sauvignon - 4/11/2023

        2. Casas Del Bosque, Varietal Cabernet Sauvignon (unable to find rest of the variety); year 2019; Price $9.99; Chile - "foothills of the Andes"

James Suckling

"Red and black currants, mulberries, bramble leaves, peppermint, spice box and peppercorns on the nose. Medium-bodied with firm, well-integrated tannins. Sleek and classically styled with excellent balance. Sustainable. Drink now or hold."

My personal take:

I had the wine by itself with no food to accompany it. However, ten minutes prior I had eatedn Pesto pasta using 85% lean ground turkey. I will say, the pairing was not idealistic in terms of what is recommended, but the after taste of dinner and the wine actually paired pretty well. I did not get the ick however, I could tell the alcohol content was higher because the roof of my mouth was burning a bit. Overall this red had a lighter body than the others I have tried and was lighter in all regards in my opinion. I caught some flavors of birch, cinnomon, and spice, as well as a darker fruit, but I can't name one in specific. I don't know a whole bunch of dark fruits other than some kinds of grapes... I TASTED RED GRAPES! Yeah, no kidding. Anyhow, this sat a lot better in my mouth and nose without as much of the burning sensations and it sat in my tummy pretty well too. As someone who rarely every drinks a sip of alcohol this was fairly tolerable. I also can't smell my own breath which is something I can't really stand when it comes to drinking wine. All in all, it was quite pleasant and if I were to shop for wine I wouldn't mind trying this again.

19 Crimes Cali Rose Wine Review 2/8/23

  1. 19 crimes Cali Rose; Variety: 75% Zinfandel, 20% Grenache, 5% Pinot Noir; Region: California; Year: 2020; Price - $10.29

    1. https://www.vivino.com/US/en/nineteen-crimes-snoop-cali-rose/w/9368797

    2. Wine was chosen by Chloe, she comes from the sticks and said this was a good Rose to try. It had Snoop’s face on it and I thought, well, it ain’t no fun if the homies can’t have none, let's try it! We paired this wine with a chicken pesto pasta with mushrooms and a side of garlic bread. Now, before I had any food I tried some of this wine… immediately I was struck with the realization that the hot, smelly breath from my grandparents that I always smelled was derived from Rose wine, greatttttt. I could taste how their breath would smell. Anddd I got the ICK.. again. Gross! While attempting to get over the ick, I tried it while I was eating the pasta andddd it wasn’t so bad. Definitely paired better than the Tinazzi wine and pasta with meat sauce. It was definitely a sweeter and more floral wine I have tasted so far. It had 14% alcohol content and I drank mehhh.. Maybe a half full glass of it, as for the rest, Chloe killed it. Good for her. Even so, we were still probably at the same level of intoxication. I have a solid 60 lbs on Chloe and she made me look and feel like the greatest lightweight south of the Mason-Dixon line. This wine was definitely a little smoother and easier wine to drink than the others, and I’d like to try some more light red wines after this. Also, not sure if we were using the right wine glasses, but the selection was limited.

Tinazzi Wine Review - 2/2/2023

  1. Tinazzi (name unclear), Deep red table wine - Corvina and Rondinella, Valpolicella Ripasso, Italy, 2019, Cost - $19.99

  2. https://www.vivino.com/US/en/tinazzi-vinum-italicum-no-3-opera/w/1103243?year=2020

    1. Not good, my palate was ruined, did not pair with my spaghetti with meat sauce. The wine was at about 76 degrees Fahrenheit. I would much rather prefer my water from the Britta filter in my fridge that is at room temperature. My mom loved the wine and got butthurt when I said it didn’t pair well. Had to get that taste out of my mouth with some water six hours fresh out of the Britta and more pasta. Store clerk said my mom’s boyfriend had a good taste of wine when he picked it out, I’m sure he does, but… kinda got the ick, ouch. I was going to say that this wine was like dog water but I think I’d actually prefer to drink dog water. The wine was a full red wine and the meat sauce for the pasta we had used white turkey meat so the wine-food pairing was not right, and this likely explains why I was so appalled by it.

Schloss Bierbrich WIne Review from 2/3/2023

    1. Schloss Bierbrich, Dry sparkling white wine, Mosel, Germany, no age (from trader joe’s) Cost - $4.99

      1. https://www.vivino.com/US/en/de-schloss-biebrich-trocken-germany/w/8851179

      2. Tried this knockoff champagne from Germany and it was better than the red I had in the first blog post. It was called Schloss Bierbrich and uhh hmm I didn’t like it, but it was far more tolerable than the red. The legs on this sparkling wine were crazy, HA! This “champagne” was a little more dry. Took a sip and had to shake the ick out of my body. The wine was served cold and I did not eat anything with it. As a matter of fact I was in the middle of drinking my creatine in coconut water that was delectable, and my mom was making herself a mimosa, so I was like, yo ma… lemme get some of that for my class. My drink did not have OJ so it was not a mimosa, it was straight up sparkling wine.
